Peter is currently a Healthcare Actuary at Milliman Consulting in Chicago, IL.

“As an actuarial consultant in the healthcare field my day to day can fluctuate quite a bit. Our clients span across the entire healthcare spectrum: from provider organizations, pharmaceutical manufacturers, government programs, the ACA, the list goes on and on.
Personally I spend most of my time working with Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug (MAPD and PDP) organizations, employer plans, and general prescription drug market analytics. Early in my career my days were spent primarily in excel and SAS, digging around in the weeds of various sets of data working to find answers to questions that our clients and consultants would ask. As my knowledge base continues to grow over the years I have gotten more involved in the process of figuring out what questions to ask in the first place.
One thing I really like about working in the consulting environment is how dynamic it can be – the healthcare field is constantly changing and growing, and often your clients’ needs and requests will change with it (sometimes a little more than you might like!).
As an actuarial consultant you need to be able to provide deep, analytical insights to your client but deliver them in a way that is clear and appropriate for your audience, so in many ways soft business skills and personal connections are just as important as your ability to think analytically.”
