This individual has requested to remain anonymous due to the highly confidential nature of the companies for which he/she has worked for. These responses relate to InsurTech roles at companies based in the San Francisco Bay area.
- Where in the world do you work?
I work in the San Francisco Bay Area
- Prior to the pandemic, did you work primarily in an office or from home? What about now?
Prior to the pandemic I worked primarily out of an office – WFH was considered a rare privilege. Now, I work primarily from home. Our team plans to come into the office once a week indefinitely.
- Do you travel for work? If so, how much? To where?
No 🙂
- What type of company do you work for? (Ie. Traditional Insurance, Consulting Firm, Government, etc.) Name of company?
Currently InsurTech.
I have worked for a number of traditional PPA insurers, all primarily direct companies.
All of my employers have been direct/online insurers. They provide a traditional product but there is much more emphasis on incorporating telematics, making the quote process easier, and fine-tuning the mobile app.
- What do you like about this work environment? What do you find challenging or what would you change?
I love working in this environment (small/InsurTech) but it’s all I know. It’s more common to work with individuals with no insurance background whatsoever, it’s also more common to interact directly with agents or adjusters. Shifting audiences so often is challenging but so rewarding.
- Culture of company/country – What type of vacation benefits do you get?
Vacation: My current and previous employer offered unlimited PTO (both InsurTechs)
- How flexible is your company about when/how you get work done? Are there set “business hours” you’re expected to be working and available?
There is no hard rule, but my team is generally available from 9-5. It’s easy to work around scheduled appointments during the day, but no one is consistently working 1PM-9PM or anything.
- Do you often work more than 40 hours per work? Is there pressure from leadership or peers to do so?
I don’t often work over 40 hours a week. There is some expectation that everyone is reachable when they’re not on PTO – especially with WFH. There’s a huge distinction between being available for urgent requests and always being online! With flexible work hours and mismatched schedules this can be a really tough distinction to make.
- Do you hang out with coworkers outside of work? What types of company sponsored events have you attended or has your company hosted?
We don’t hang out outside work, maybe one day! Everyone is friendly though and we do like to hear about what everyone is doing outside of work. No organized events so far.
- What aspects of working for your company and in your geographic location do you love? What would you change?
The weather is awesome, but I wish everything was closer. The bay area is SO big, the average commute tends to be about an hour all things included.
- If you could work anywhere in the world, where would you choose?
My home office here in SF!
